New Sherif in Town, now known as Spirit, was found at an Oklahoma auction/kill lot called Stroud.

To learn more about the process of rescuing horses from a kill pen we have included information directly from the Stroud Oklahoma Kill Pen Horse page, which states: "the owner of the Pen has given us the opportunity to list some of the Horses, Donkeys, and Mules with the hope of saving them from being shipped to slaughter. All have been purchased by the owner and the horses showcased on the page have been chosen because they are friendly, gentle, and seem sound. The lot only has a short time to evaluate these horses...."

We rescued Spirit and he took his freedom ride the next day, out of the kill lot and to a local quarantine facility called Safe Keep Place. From the minute Sue and her staff picked him up at the lot they sent us constant updates and pictures.

What made this temporary home even more special is that Sue and her sister are both Veterans. They took loving care of Spirit and even helped us find the horses a safe ride across the country from Oklahoma to us in New England.

Once his 30 day quarantine was complete it was time to bring Spirit home. Upon arrival, Spirit's uncertainty of what awaited him was apparent as he backed off the trailer. His fear of what was waiting outside shook his entire body. The reality is that these horses are rescued from lots where they await an unjust fate...never knowing why or where they are being moved to next. Fortunately we found Spirit in time, this truly was his freedom ride, and it didn’t take long for him to realize that he was safe and finally home. Spirit has already started healing others, he is a gentle quiet soul. His peaceful and kind energy reaches out to touch everyone around him. “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.”
