Poco
2002 Quarter Horse Mare
Poco was at the same auction we found Oliver and Stella at, but we didn’t see her run through the sale. She was already loaded on the kill buyer’s truck. Her owner sold her directly to the kill lot. The true definition of tossed away, she didn’t even have a chance to run through the auction and find a home. The whites of Poco’s eyes were brighter than a flashlight looking out of that trailer. This discarded brood mare, too old to breed anymore, was absolutely terrified.
The lot she was headed to is notorious for starving horses. Poco was already underweight and we knew her chances of making it out alive were zero. Whether she starved at the lot like so many others or shipped to slaughter, leaving her was a death sentence.
We bought her off his trailer and brought her home. Her feet are so overgrown it will take multiple visits to get them back. But she’s alive, she’s safe, and she’s free. Never again will she have to prove her value to be taken care of properly.
