Roux is a striking chestnut mare and a treasured member of Stark’s resilient family band. With her bright eyes and fiery coat, she stands out instantly, but it’s her quiet determination and deep loyalty to her herd that truly define her.

Roux comes from the same heartbreaking situation as the rest of the band. After being part of an internet “rescue” from a kill lot, the group was marked “safe,” only to be passed from place to place and ultimately abandoned at a quarantine facility where they were not being fed. By the time we found them, every horse in the band, including Roux, was severely emaciated and malnourished, trying desperately to survive.

For months, we ensured they received feed and wellness checks while searching for safe placement options. When no viable alternatives existed, the entire band traveled to our South location, where they now have a permanent, stable home and where Roux will never again be shuffled around or left behind.

Roux carries herself with a thoughtful alertness, the kind of mare who sees everything and chooses her responses carefully. She may hang back at first, studying new people and situations, but her presence within the herd is steady and grounding. As she settles in, we are beginning to see glimmers of softness, curiosity, and the beginnings of a trust built on true safety.

Now, in a place where she is finally secure, Roux has the chance to rediscover herself beyond survival. We’re honored to give her the time, space, and compassion she needs to heal and thrive.
