Sable
1995 - 2025, Quarter Horse Mare
Sable is our newest arrival, a resilient Quarter Horse mare whose gentle spirit shines through despite the hardships she’s endured. While we can’t share many details about her rescue just yet, we can tell you this: Sable’s journey to safety is part of a much larger, ongoing effort to save more lives.
We don’t know much about her history… was she once loved by a little girl? Did she braid her mane and tail and ride her bareback on the trails? We can only imagine what her past could have been like before she ended up where she was. What we do know is that she’s older, worn by time and struggle, and in visibly rough shape. Part of her left ear is missing, a silent testament to what she's survived. But despite it all, Sable is incredibly sweet, soft-eyed, and clearly longing for love and connection. She’s already begun to lean into the kindness being offered to her, and we can’t wait to show her what it means to be safe, seen, and cherished.
On June 17, just over 3 weeks since her arrival, Sable laid down and could not get back up. We called in an emergency vet who gave her fluids and we waited, but she didn’t have the strength anymore. Her body had been through too much. She fought hard until the very end and passed peacefully surrounded by people who loved her, if only for a short 3 weeks. We wish we had more time with her and could have seen her gain weight and thrive in her golden years, but we take solace in the fact that she experienced love, a full belly, and what it is like to graze peacefully amongst friends in safety for the time she was with us.
